White House Summit Speaker, Hotchkiss’ Jason Maier on Bitcoin, Speakeasy at Salisbury Association Exhibit

You may recall that Susan and Tino Galluzzo donated art to Noble Horizons last winter which we displayed in the gallery last spring. Thanks to the discerning eyes of cottager Tina Chandler and the talented team of Roz and Richard Roney Dougal (pictured flanking a Wyeth), the art has been expertly hung throughout Noble. "It is pure bliss to see the new collection of paintings from the Galluzzos dotted here and there," exclaimed one cottager. "It is better around every corner I turn...it's like a scavenger hunt, too! So good!!!" The next time you are on campus, please keep an eye out for the newly hung art; you will be enchanted.

Fall officially arrived last week and with it, the busy pace of the fall event season!  We were thrilled to welcome Keith Moon back to campus for a captivating program about his recent work with Ukrainian refugees and this Friday at 11 am you can enjoy Verena Drake's final class on the Dutch Golden Age of Painting which dazzled her audience last week. Please read further for upcoming event news!

Noble celebrated the Jewish New Year with a delicious Rosh Hashanah meal and is gearing up for a Salisbury Fall Festival activity sure to charm festival goers. In honor of the joy our pet therapy visitors bring each week, residents are baking dog biscuits which will be available for festival-goers to decorate with pet-friendly icing!  Be sure to pick up a yummy treat for your favorite pooch!

As we close in on the magnificent month of October, please remember to look up-scatterings of fall foliage colors are emerging and the best is yet to come!

A Road Map to Retirement: Why the Journey is Different for Women

Cindy Hounsell has served as a delegate for several White House Summits including the last two White House Conferences on Aging. As founder of WISER,The Women's Institute for a Secure Retirement, she has devoted decades of her professional life to improving retirement opportunities for women. WHY?

  • Women usually live longer than men.
  • Women make 82 cents to every dollar a man earns.
  • Women are more likely to work part-time jobs without access to workplace savings plans.
  • Women have been primary caregivers, often leaving jobs and careers to care for family.
  • Many older women rely on social security as their only source of income.

A nationally renowned expert on women's retirement issues who frequently testifies before Congress, Hounsell is frequently quoted in The New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, and Boston Globe among other media outlets, has appeared on ABC, CBS, CNN, CNBC, Fox Morning News & Financial News, NPR’s A-1, All Things Considered, Morning Edition and Marketplace and was interviewed by Diane Sawyer on Good Morning America.  More information about her free October 13, 7 pm program is here.

Understanding The Potential Promise and Peril of Crypto Currency

On October 29 at 2 pm, the chair of The Hotchkiss School’s Mathematics and Computer Science Departments, Jason Maier, will explain the basics of Bitcoin in a way that will allow you to explain crypto to someone else.  Often described as “digital gold”, Bitcoin is transforming the world's understanding of money because it provides a way to transmit value across the world instantly with practically zero cost.  Jason will discuss this maturing technology’s potential impact on social justice and equality as well as the security risks of an unregulated currency whose use is anonymous and irreversible.

Maier has been on the Hotchkiss faculty for 14 years and is the author of the upcoming book A Progressive’s Case for Bitcoin which will be released in 2023.  Jason has given numerous talks and interviews about the book and introduced Bitcoin to new audiences. There will be devoted time for Q&A; please find more info or register here.
