Hamish, Free Hearing Screenings, Wellness Month, It’s Back

How can it be August already? As always, summer is flying by!  Before July slipped away, Wanda Houston and her fabulous HBH & T Band performed a rousing concert on a spectacular evening for over 100 guests who literally danced with joy.  Please click here for a quick sample!  Music is again the theme this week, as a group heads off to the Sharon Playhouse for their recently opened, and extremely well-reviewed performance of Guys and Dolls.

Another highlight of July was a visit to the stupendous American Mural Project, the world's largest (5 stories high) collaborative artwork.  The mural has been in development for over a decade and is a tribute to American workers, highlighting their defining contributions to the country over the last century. Don't miss it!

We hope August will bring a little rain to hydrate the parched grounds turning browner by the day; despite the weather, however, the resident gardens continue to flourish, providing delicious harvests for freshly prepared meals. We wish you a wonderful final month of summer with the perfect mixture of cooling rains and brilliant sunshine!

Free Hearing Screenings

On August 31 at 10 am, learn more about hearing loss from hearing specialist Neil Di Stefano who will discuss the causes, updates in treatment, complications of age-related hearing loss, and how to best address it. Individual hearing screenings will begin at 10:30 am.

In a study that tracked 639 adults for nearly 12 years, experts at Johns Hopkins found that mild hearing loss doubled dementia risk. Moderate loss tripled the risk, and people with severe hearing impairments were five times more likely to develop dementia. According to Frank Lin, M.D., Ph.D. who led the research, “Brain scans show us that hearing loss may contribute to a faster rate of atrophy in the brain. Hearing loss also contributes to social isolation. You may not want to be with people as much, and when you are you may not engage in conversation as much. These factors may contribute to dementia.”  Learn more or register.

His program, scheduled for August 29, 7-8 pm via Zoom, is entitled Eastern Europe Today: “There is an infinite amount of hope in the universe… Just not for us.”

The Wall Street Journal and Noble Horizons Offer Tips for Wellness Month!

Celebrate National Wellness Month by reducing the stress in your life! As reported in our last newsletter, certain types of stress accelerate the immune system's aging and increase the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and high blood pressure. Finding ways to reduce and cope with stress can bring long-term benefits.

Backed by the latest research, The August 3 Wall Street Journal urged readers to "get in the habit of taking a walk outside with a friend"; we also suggest that you attend Suzanne Mazzarelli's free Stress Reduction Workshops at 10 am on August 9 and 23.

According to The Wall Street Journal, "A brisk walk in nature with a friend combines three of the most effective stress-reducing and resilience-building techniques, according to psychologists and scientific research: physical exercise, social connection, and spending time in nature. The activity works by helping normalize the hormonal changes that result from chronic stress and boosting the emotional resources that help us cope."

Why not grab a friend, and after attending Suzanne's workshop, enjoy a peaceful stroll along Noble's shaded nature trails?
