Kay Carlucci exudes positive energy and an infectious joie de vivre, traits that have helped her quickly acclimate to Noble Horizons. Though she and her husband, Arthur, moved to the area and to their Noble Horizons Cobble apartment just over a year ago, she’s fully immersed in her new life, despite the arrival of COVID this spring.
She and Arthur had been living in Southbury, but Kay remembers a friend urging her to, “Take a look at Noble; I think you’d like it there.” It turns out her friend was right.
“When we first came for a visit we had dinner here. Everyone was so nice. When I moved in it was the same. People were friendly and concerned for you. They make sure you try new things.” Making friends has never been an issue for Kay with her joiner spirit. Kay recounts, “I joined everything. I took every class I could. I went on shopping trips two to three times a week to get to know the area. Last week, I took a bus ride in the country. We were all socially distanced and wearing masks and it was wonderful to safely see the scenery.”
Kay loves people. Growing up in a family of five, being a mother to six children, and grandmother to many more she’s used to having people around her and making them feel comfortable. “I could talk to the walls. I love people. They’re so interesting. There’s no such thing as a boring person, you just haven’t found that little knob of a topic that will pull them in.” She enjoys being involved and looks forward to when she can consider volunteering. “I’ve worked with Meals on Wheels and helping the terminally ill. Volunteering is good for you. You end up getting the most out of it,” Kay reflects.
During COVID, Kay has become part of a Chit Chat group that meets several times a week in the library. “We love talking to each other even though we didn’t really know one another before COVID.” The library is also where Kay can indulge her deep affection for reading. “In the past, I read three books at time–a literary book, a biography, and then something fun, like a mystery. Right now, I’m reading mysteries and have enjoyed large print books. It makes it so much easier.”
While not able to enjoy programs in person right now, Kay regularly participates in the exercise classes and explores other opportunities available through Noble’s extensive Zoom programs and offerings.
This inquisitive approach to life is something she’s proud to have passed onto her own children. “I taught them to be curious about things. What makes things work? What makes people who they are? Without curiosity, what is life?”
