What Does “Memory Care” Mean?

Memory Care is a program or level of specialized care for people living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Dedicated areas of senior living communities provide safe and secure environments where staff can closely monitor the well-being of residents. You’ll also find programs, activities, and events that are designed to help memory care residents maximize their cognitive abilities, enjoy their passions and hobbies, and introduce new ones.

As in assisted living, residential memory care communities provide meals and help with activities of daily living. Additionally, memory care should include:

  • A lower staff-to-resident ratio
  • 24-hour supervised care
  • Specially trained nursing staff
  • Structured layouts and activities
  • Emergency call systems
  • Cognitive treatments and therapies

You’ll often find that memory care neighborhoods are designed differently than other areas of a senior living community. They have enhanced security to prevent wandering, a common behavior among people with dementia. They also have clearly defined shared spaces, secured and alarmed doors, and keypad entrances for staff. Some, like Noble Horizons, even have outdoor gardens or interior courtyards for residents to enjoy.

Memory Care also includes innovative cognitive therapies that address memory loss, disorientation wandering, and other side effects of dementia by providing effective therapies to reduce symptoms. Treatments are based on individual needs but can include:

  • Art therapy
  • Pet therapy
  • Light therapy
  • Music therapy
  • Aromatherapy
  • Sensory stimulation
  • Storytelling
  • Reminiscence therapy
