It's been only two weeks since our last newsletter but so much has changed! Noble's campus, recently ablaze in brilliant fall foliage, is now dominated by the stark elegance of bare tree limbs. The disappearance of daylight savings time has thrust us into a disconcerting afternoon darkness, and the dramatic drop in temperatures, accompanied by this week's predicted snow flurries, has set the stage for the holiday season!
Speaking of the holidays, take care of all your holiday shopping at the Auxiliary's November 19 Holiday Fair and its glorious Festival of Trees where you can bid on dazzling trees, displays, and wreaths created by local businesses, friends, and artists. You'll also discover a big sale at the Country Store on November 19 and one dozen raffle baskets bursting with gifts from your favorite local merchants!
While on campus, treat yourself to the fabulous 50th-anniversary art exhibit. Whether you're a fan of sculpture, abstract art or landscapes, large works or small, oils, or watercolors, the talented artists in this show will transport you. You may even find the perfect holiday gift!
Don't forget to take your holiday guests to the Salisbury Association's Art of Aging 50th Anniversary Exhibit. Because Noble's story is so intertwined with the local community, the Association building is brimming with captivating memories of our town's last 50 years; be sure to enjoy the 50th video and individual interviews with Representative Maria Horn, Selectman Don Mayland, Lakeville Journal publisher Janet Manko, Elyse Harney and so many others.
Carolyne Roehm Shares Her Passions with Noble
In a world that seems increasingly unhinged, a calm and soothing space can be transformative. Fortunately for Noble residents, Carolyne Roehm has captured her 'happy place' in a volume of books entitled Passions, copies of which she recently donated to Noble Horizons. Residents have happily discovered that Roehm's favorite things resonate with theirs and thanks to her gift, they will be easily accessible to you as well.
Passions is a volume of books that celebrates the joy of immersing yourself in what brings you joy. Roehm explains, "I hope this little trio of books about the joy I've found in flowers and gardening, allure in feminine style and love of furry friends delights and inspires you as it has me." The elegant books are filled with exquisite images and words that lift and inspire her, and likely will you as well. You can take home your own set-and one for your friends as well-by shopping at the Holiday Fair on November 19, 9 am-3 pm.
Honoring Veterans
One of the great privileges of being a United States citizen is the opportunity to commemorate the courageous men and women of our nation's armed forces. On Veteran's Day last Friday, Noble Horizons recognized seventeen resident and staff veterans with a special luncheon and ceremony honoring their valor and service.
Special mention was made of Sergeant Edward A. Nickerson who, following his heroic service in WWII, was awarded a Silver Star Medal for his gallantry in action against an enemy of the United States. He also received a Purple Heart, bestowed upon those who have been wounded by an opposing enemy force while in armed combat. We salute the sacrifices and selfless bravery of all who have protected our country and cherished our way of life.
Upcoming Events
As Noble Horizons' 50th-anniversary celebrations yield to the festive holiday events for which Noble is so well known, you can look forward to a full schedule of exciting programs in the new year. As always, we'll be collaborating with local partners, including professionals from Salisbury Bank and faculty from The Hotchkiss School. Of course, we'll also be hosting experts from beyond the tri-state region who will enlighten, inspire and engage you throughout the winter months ahead.
Registering for the January 10 Red Cross blood drive will give you the opportunity to welcome the new year by saving up to three lives. You can also learn more about planning for the 'new retirement' in which older adults, faced with the prospect of living longer, healthier lives are redefining retirement by seeking new freedoms, purpose, and challenges. We have also scheduled a gallery exhibit opening on January 20 that will feature the area's finest photographers.
Of course, our very popular free weekly balance and fall prevention class continues on Wednesdays from 10:30-11:30 am, offering the opportunity to maintain your strength and fitness during the long, cold New England winter.
