Professor Nadine Strossen and Federal Judge William Kuntz

Noble welcomed two distinguished speakers on January 21. Nadine Strossen, president of the ACLU from 1991-2008, now a professor of law at NYU, discussed her new book, HATE: Why We Should Resist It with Free Speech, Not Censorship, and her Harvard Law classmate and longtime friend, the Honorable William Kuntz II, United States District Court Judge for the Eastern District of New York.

Judge Kuntz queried Professor Strossen about the finer points of her central thesis that censorship of hate-filled rhetoric is counterproductive while the exercise of free speech, which includes demonstrations, counter protests and advocacy, is an effective means of achieving “equality, diversity, inclusivity and societal harmony.”

Professor Strossen’s book will be released by the Oxford University Press in May.
