Expedition Narwhal: Revealing an Arctic Legend

joe_meehan_narwhal

Discover the beguiling secrets of the mysterious Arctic Narwhal at a free presentation on March 3, 11am at Noble Horizons.

Joseph Meehan served as expedition and documentary photographer in the groundbreaking study by Dr. Martin Nweeia of Sharon to determine the function of the Arctic Narwhal’s tusk. The expeditions, which occurred over a decade, are featured in a major exhibition at the Smithsonian Museum, Washington DC, “Narwhal: Revealing an Arctic Legend,” running through July 2019. A book by the same name accompanies the exhibition and contains Meehan’s photographs which will be seen in this presentation.

Meehan will take the audience on a visual journey recorded during three expeditions including the stunning landscapes of the high Canadian Arctic, the western coastline of Greenland and through ice fields to that country’s outer most northern islands. He will also show candid portraits of the Inuit hunters with whom he lived and worked and who shared knowledge of the narwhal gleaned over many generations.

Joseph Meehan is a former professor who has taught at colleges and universities in the US, England and Asia. He has written 25 books on photographic techniques several of which have been published in multiple languages.

Registration for the program is at www.noblehorizons.org or 860-435-9851. Noble Horizons is located at 17 Cobble Road in Salisbury, CT.
