A Brave New World Summer Course

A Brave New World
Hotchkiss School instructor and former English Department Chair, Carita Gardiner, B.A., Amherst, M.Ed., Harvard, M.A. Middlebury, will teach a course on Aldous Huxley’s timeless classic A Brave New World beginning on July 9 from 10-11 am. This provocative, powerful, and riveting novel presents a brilliant and terrifying vision of a soulless and technologically advanced future that imagines how devotion to pleasure and instant gratification could shape our culture.
Classes will meet on July 9, 11, 16, 18, 23 from 10-11 am. Ms. Gardiner has taught at Hotchkiss for 20 years and also serves on the Curriculum Review Committee. Using techniques of close reading, she will explore and discuss Huxley's astute insights into human nature and decide what his nearly one hundred-year-old novel can tell us about life in 2019 and beyond. Registration for the 5-class series is below or at 860-435-9851; the $25 fee (includes all five classes) may be remitted at the first class.
